4. What is covered by a Cisco warranty?

Warranties provide Cisco with a short-term limited responsibility to repair and/or replace problems in Cisco products. They are limited in terms and support, and most warranties do not cover Cisco TAC assistance, software upgrades, or any of the other benefits acquired through a support service contract. Cisco is responsible for repairing and/or replacing the Cisco product within the time frame provided in the warranty card that came with the original Cisco product. A standard Cisco warranty covers the following components:

-Hardware: This assures that the hardware will be free of material and workmanship problems under normal use, or it will be replaced by Cisco within the specified period.

-Software: This ensures that the physical media are free of flaws, otherwise Cisco will replace them. The warranty is expressly stated to be "as is," and no new releases are covered.

5. Why should I purchase Cisco SMARTnet Service if a product is already covered under the normal Cisco warranty?

The Cisco SMARTnet Service offers a higher degree of support than is available under a Cisco warranty. When compared to Cisco SMARTnet Service, most Cisco warranties are restricted in time (specified particularly by device type). The following features are offered under a Cisco SMARTnet Service subscription but are not warranted:

-Rapid hardware replacement in NBD, 4-hour, or 2-hour dispatch choices (restrictions apply; see Cisco SMARTnet data sheet for additional information, as well as Return for Repair on select video products)

-Ongoing technical help from the Cisco TAC

-The most recent operating system updates, covering both minor and major releases within the licensed feature set

-Registered access to self-help materials and tools online

-Alerts and proactive troubleshooting for Call Home-capable devices
