What is 5G mmWave Spectrum?

New Radio (NR) is the wireless standard and foundation for the 5th generation of mobile networks. Its development is part of continuous mobile broadband evolution process to meet the requirements of 5G as outlined by IMT-2020. NR aims to make wireless broadband same as of wireline with the fiber-like performance at a significantly lower cost-per-bit. To achieve this NR is exploring new spectrum opportunities to address the expected capacity and data rates and this spectrum is spread in cmWave and mmWaves band.

The complete spectrum is shown in figure below , it depicts (in Yellow) the existing bands which can be already been in use and can be utilized by NR for mobile broadband and massive IoT types of applications. Then shows the band with color as green which is under study by ITU WRC-19 and red colored band with larger bandwidth.

5G NR can utilize a spectrum from 6 GHz to 100 GHz. There is 10x increase in 5G system bandwidth (from 100 MHz in LTE-A to 1 GHz+) when it is compared to LTE-A.  The band for NR are basically classified as Low Band, Mid Band and High Band and these these band can used based on the application as given below:

• Low bands below 1 GHz: longer range for e.g. mobile broadband and massive IoT e.g. 600 MHz, 700 MHz, 850/900 MHz

• Mid bands 1 GHz to 6 GHz: wider bandwidths for e.g. eMBB and mission-critical e.g. 3.4-3.8 GHz, 3.8-4.2 GHz, 4.4-4.9 GHz

• High bands above 24 GHz (mmWave): extreme bandwidths e.g. 24.25-27.5 GHz, 27.5-29.5, 37-40, 64-71 GHz
