The differences between 10GE LAN and 10GE WAN

Their bottom-layer encapsulation structures are different. A 10GE WAN signal contains an SDH/SONET encapsulation header but a 10GE LAN signal does not.

1. 10GE LAN services: Ethernet MAC frames are processed based on 66B/64B line coding and then are directly transmitted over an optical fiber. 10GE LAN services are mainly used for interconnection between LANs and used in point-to-point application scenarios using fibers or WDM equipment.

2. 10GE WAN services: Ethernet MAC frames are processed based on 66B/64B line coding, encapsulated into standard SDH/SONET frames, and then directly transmitted over an optical fiber. 10GE MAN services are mainly used for interconnection between LANs or MANs and used in point-to-point application scenarios using fibers or SDH/WDM equipment.

• For the WDM system, 10GE WAN services can be considered 10G SDH signals. Therefore, SDH signals need to be selected on the client-side.

• 10GE LAN signals are also Ethernet signals. Therefore, LAN signals need to be selected on the client side.

• The payload rate of 10GE LAN signals is 10.3125 Gbit/s while that of 10GE WAN signals is 9.953 Gbit/s.

Hope this helps.
