D-CCAP Solution Overview

The distributed converged cable access platform (D-CCAP) solution supports DOCSIS 3.0 services and will gradually evolve to DOCSIS 3.1. It maximizes DOCSIS 3.1 performance on high order modulation (HOM) at the physical layer and provides ultra-broadband cable access for carriers. In this way, the service life of HFC networks is extended to the next decade. Compared with DOCSIS 3.0, DOCSIS 3.1 features high bandwidths and spectrum usage so that it empowers operators to provide smooth and clear audio as well as video experience for users over the Internet.
D-CCAP Solution Overview
Provides an upstream bandwidth over 2 Gbit/s and a downstream bandwidth over 10 Gbit/s.
  • Compatible with existing MSO networks.
  • Adapts to HFC networks divided by various spectrums.
  • Achieves smooth evolution without restructuring existing networks.

Network Architecture
Distributed converged cable access platform (D-CCAP) meets the requirements of triple-play network services over hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) networks of multiservice operators (MSOs) because of unique advantages of the D-CCAPs, such as high bandwidth and supporting HFC networks
Built-in Optical Receiver or Transmitter and WDM and EQAM
Built-in Optical Receiver or Transmitter and WDM and EQAM
The WDM in the branch equipment room combines data signals and CATV signals for signal transmission over one feeder fiber. On the optical node, the WDM built in the CMC separates the two types of signals from each other.
The EQAM built in the CMC is moved downwards from the branch equipment room to the fiber node.

Transmission Media Change Improves CNR by 7–8 dB
Transmission Media Change Improves CNR by 7–8 dB
In a cable network, carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) is a key factor that affects bandwidth improvement. Specifically, insufficient CNR in a cable network hinders bandwidth improvement. An improved CNR supports a higher modulation order and bandwidth accordingly in a traditional network, the distribution hub and fiber node use analog fibers for transmission, that is, analog signals are transmitted from the distribution hub to cable modems (CMs).
D-CCAP shortens transmission distance of analog signals, that is, analog signals are transmitted between the CM and CMC and digital signals are transmitted between the OLT and CMC. This solution improves line quality and CNR so that more bandwidth can be obtained
Equipment Room Space Reduction
Equipment Room Space Reduction
To cope with network expansion, multiple system operators (MSOs) deploy numerous types of devices in their distribution hubs. More and more devices cover vast equipment room and much room space is required. In traditional CMTS and CCAP solutions, devices such as mixer, codec, and EQAM are deployed in the distribution hub, resulting in insufficient space for network expansion. In the D-CCAP solution, devices such as mixer, EQAM, and optical receiver or transmitter are built in the CMC and the CMC is moved downwards to the fiber node. In addition, the original CMTS is replaced with the OLT. This solution reduces types of devices in the distribution hub.

FTTH and traditional cable networks be constructed in collaboration
The SmartAX EA5800 multi-service access module (OLT) is supports multiple network construction modes, including FTTH, and D-CCAP.
In this scenario, an OLT connects to D-CCAP users and FTTH users. The "subrack-shared and board-separated" construction mode is recommended on the OLT. Specifically, the D-CCAP users and the FTTH users are connected to separate boards in the OLT. This mode facilitates O&M and service expansion.
