O Cisco 1000BASE-T Gigabit Interface Converter (GBIC) é uma solução ideal para clientes de switch Catalyst ® 6500, 4000, 3550, 2950, 3500 XL e 2900 XL Series, fornecendo conectividade Gigabit Ethernet full duplex para estações de trabalho de ponta e entre armários de cabeamento sobre infraestruturas de rede de cobre existentes. Essa tecnologia GBIC aproveita o design 1000BASE-X flexível e baseado em padrões do setor, permitindo um caminho de migração simples e de baixo custo para Gigabit Ethernet. O Cisco 1000BASE-ZX GBIC (WS-G5487) opera em enlaces de fibra óptica de modo único comuns com extensão de até 43,4 milhas (70 km). Extensões de link de até 62 milhas (100 km) são possíveis usando fibra monomodo premium ou fibra monomodo com deslocamento de dispersão. O GBIC fornece um orçamento de link óptico de 21 dB - o comprimento exato do link dependerá de vários fatores, como qualidade da fibra, número de emendas e conectores.
