El diseño de la serie Cisco 8200 produce una eficiencia energética sin precedentes. Para lograr un ancho de banda y una escala enrutados equivalentes, otros enrutadores requieren varios dispositivos, como memoria direccionable de contenido ternario (TCAM) fuera del chip y ASIC de estructura.

Las huellas de 1 y 2 RU de la serie 8200 les permiten implementarse en ubicaciones que tradicionalmente requerían un chasis mucho más grande y adaptaciones especiales para alimentación y refrigeración. El aprovisionamiento de 10,8 Tbps en el chasis de generación 100G más eficiente requiere más de siete veces el espacio y cuatro veces la energía. Si bien los sistemas SoC se ajustan al espacio de 1 RU, su falta de almacenamiento en búfer, su conjunto de funciones más pequeño y su baja escala restringen su capacidad para servir en muchas funciones de proveedores e interconexión de centros de datos (DCI). Por ejemplo, los dispositivos SoC tradicionales brindan solo cientos de microsegundos de almacenamiento en búfer, lo que limita su idoneidad para los flujos de tráfico sin tiempos de ida y vuelta muy bajos. Por el contrario, la serie 8200 proporciona decenas de milisegundos de almacenamiento en búfer y admite grandes tablas de reenvío. La capacidad de implementar un enrutador con todas las funciones en instalaciones con limitaciones de energía y espacio, como colocación, redes de entrega de contenido (CDN), puntos de intercambio de Internet (IXP) o sitios de oficinas centrales más antiguos, abre nuevas posibilidades para los diseños de red.
