Fortinet End-of-Life Policy Overview

Router-Switch.com provides this summary based on the official End of Life (EOL) policy published by Fortinet. The goal is to help users clearly understand how Fortinet defines lifecycle milestones, support timelines, and the transition process as products move toward EOL and End of Service Life (EOSL).

Scope of the Fortinet Life Cycle Policy

The Fortinet life cycle policy covers hardware products, software, appliance services (such as FortiGuard subscriptions), and stand-alone services like Premium Technical Support. In this policy, a product may refer to any of these categories.

End-of-Life Notifications

As a product approaches the end of its active selling phase, Fortinet issues a public End-of-Life (EOL) notification. This notice typically describes how and when the product will be withdrawn from sale and support, and may include the End of Order Date (EOO), the End of Support Date (EOS), and recommended replacement products.

Key Lifecycle Milestones

The life cycle process follows several key milestones. Understanding these milestones helps with planning renewals, migrations, and upgrades. The table below summarizes the main milestones and their typical timing.

Milestone Definition Typical Timing
General Availability Date (GA) The date when a product is first made generally available to the public and related service contracts can be purchased. Lifecycle starting point.
End of Life Notification (EOLN) A formal notice that provides information about end of support and the last order date. For firmware, the EOL date is normally defined on the GA date. Issued before EOO; for firmware, EOL date is usually known on the GA date.
End of Order Date (EOO) The last date on which a product may be ordered. After this date, the product is no longer available for purchase. For stand-alone services, the EOO is the Last Service Extension Date. At least 90 days after the EOL notification.
Last Service Extension Date (LSED) The last date on which a service extension will be accepted for an existing contract on a hardware or software product that is no longer sold. Contracts cannot extend beyond EOS. For stand-alone services, LSED is defined separately. Hardware/Software: 12 months before EOS. Stand-alone services: 90 days after the EOL notification.
End of Engineering Support (EOES) The date beyond which Fortinet no longer commits to provide engineering support for software. After this, the software enters a must-fix phase with maintenance builds only for critical issues and security vulnerabilities. Generally 36 months after the GA date.
Final Firmware Release (FFR) The last firmware release operationally supported on a specific hardware product. It remains in a must-fix support phase until the hardware EOS date. Supported in must-fix mode until the hardware EOS date.
End of Support Date (EOS) The final lifecycle milestone. After this date, Fortinet does not sell, manufacture, improve, or provide support for the product. Hardware: 60 months after EOO. Software: 54 months after GA. Stand-alone services: on the service contract termination date.

Software and Firmware Lifecycle

For software and firmware, Fortinet generally provides full engineering support from GA until the End of Engineering Support (EOES), which is typically 36 months after GA. After EOES, the product enters a must-fix support phase, where only industry-wide critical issues and PSIRT vulnerabilities are addressed. The End of Support (EOS) for software typically occurs 54 months after GA. For each hardware model, a Final Firmware Release (FFR) is designated and kept in must-fix support until the hardware EOS date.

Hardware and FortiCare Lifecycle

For hardware products and FortiCare services, the End of Order Date (EOO) marks the last day the product can be purchased. Fortinet typically gives at least 90 days advance notice before EOO via an EOL notification. Service contracts for hardware and software cannot be renewed beyond the EOS date, and the Last Service Extension Date (LSED) is generally 12 months before EOS. Hardware EOS normally occurs 60 months after EOO.

Stand-Alone Services and FortiGuard Subscriptions

For stand-alone services, the End of Order Date is effectively the Last Service Extension Date, which is set to 90 days after the EOL notification. EOS for stand-alone services occurs on the service contract termination date. For FortiGuard subscription services, new features may require firmware updates, and Fortinet provides updates only for supported firmware releases, while reserving the right to extend updates beyond EOS at its discretion.
